2008 Physician Quality Reporting Initiative (PQRI): New Educational Product Available

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is pleased to announce a new educational resource has been posted to the PQRI webpage on the CMS website. The print version will be available shortly.

To access the 2008 PQRI Fact Sheet and other educational resources, visit http://www.cms.hhs.gov/PQRI on the CMS website. Go to the Educational Resources tab and scroll down to the Downloads section, where you will find the 2008 PQRI Reporting Fact Sheet link.

Reporting for the 2008 Physician Quality Reporting Initiative (PQRI) began January 1, 2008.

Eligible professionals should begin submitting appropriate 2008 Quality Data Codes on qualifying Part B claims with a date of service of January 1, 2008. Information on the 119 2008 Physician Quality Reporting Initiative (PQRI) measures, release notes, and detailed specifications are available on http://www.cms.hhs.gov/pqri on the CMS website. Eligible professionals are encouraged to contact their professional associations for additional information and tools that will facilitate participation.

The American Medical Association (AMA) has posted PQRI worksheets for the 2008 PQRI program on the AMA website at http://www.ama-assn.org/on the internet. These worksheets will also be available in the CMS 2008 PQRI Toolkit which will be posted on http://www.cms.hhs.gov/pqrion the CMS website.

PQRI Question of the Week:

Q: What is the bonus available for eligible professionals who successfully participate in 2008 PQRI?

A: Incentive payments for successful participation in 2008 PQRI will be paid from the Medicare Part B Trust Fund- same as for 2007. Eligible professionals may earn a bonus payment of 1.5% of total allowed charges for covered services payable under the Medicare Physician Fee Schedule.

Coding for Quality- A Handbook for PQRI Participation and the 2007 PQRI Code Master, an Excel spreadsheet with a sequential list of all ICD-9-CM (I9) and CPT (CPT4) codes with associated CPT II exclusion modifiers, are available at
the CMS Web site. Go to Educational Resources and scroll down to the Downloads.
