Hospital AdmissionSenior in a hospital bed If a doctor wants to admit you to the hospital, but the hospital says your stay is not medically necessary, you will receive a Hospital Issued Notice of Noncoverage letter. This letter tells you how to appeal the decision.

Medicare Beneficiary Rights
As soon as you get the Hospital Issued Notice of Noncoverage, you have the right to request a free review of your medical case to determine whether Medicare will pay for your hospital stay.

If you are enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan such as an HMO, you must appeal the decision through the plan.

Medicare Beneficiary Responsibilities
When you get the letter, you must call to ask for a free review using the phone number the hospital gives you. You can call us toll-free at 1-800-642-8686, extension 2266. We will speak with you, your doctor, and the hospital to get enough information to make a decision. We will tell you what we decide. If your admission is medically necessary, Medicare will pay for your hospital stay.
